The butterfly bush grows best in full sun but can tolerate part shade. You can grow butterfly bush in dappled shade or morning sun and afternoon shade but avoid deep shade areas. Full sun means that the area gets at least six hours of direct sun a day. Although butterfly bushes tolerate severe pruning to maintain a smaller size, you can reduce the time you'll spend pruning by planting it in a location with plenty of room for the plant to develop its natural size and shape.
